A Different Side of Rome

The EUR, a district just south of the Roman city center, was built under the rule of Mussolini in the 1930s. It was created in celebration of fascism with the intent of hosting a World's Fair, which ended up getting cancelled due to the start of World War II. John and I went to visit this particular portion of Rome because we were interested in seeing fascist architecture. The Square Colosseum was the first thing we saw when we stepped off the metro. We were captivated immediately. During our meanderings we found a fascist architect's interpretation of the pantheon, as well as a fascist's take of the traditional Egyptian obelisk. The entire district was an imposing statement of power which, by the end of our visit, had both John and I just a little more intimidated than we would've liked to admit.
