Food Photography

I love food. I appreciate artfully prepared meals, enjoy trying new recipes, and delight in looking at food photography. I even like reading about food. One of my favorite authors, Michael Pollan, writes about the intersection of food with health, history, politics, ethics, and economics.

That said, you may not be surprised to hear that one of my favorite parts of being in Italy was the food. While we were there, John and I were able to eat non-GMO food that was local, in season, and free of high fructose corn syrup and other yucky additives.

These are some photos I took while making a skewered vegetable dish at our apartment in Italy. It didn't turn out to be as flavorful as I had hoped, so I won't share the recipe with you, but it sure was colorful and fun to photograph! One of my goals for our trip was to learn how to use the manual mode on my digital camera. It's nothing special, just a Canon PowerShot A650 IS, but it's what I have, and I am determined to make the most of it until we can afford a better one.

The Sculptures

John and I were absolutely stunned by the sculptures we saw in Italy. As we visited the Vatican Museum and the National Museum of Rome, we saw everything from an Egyptian styled hyena god to Brutus, one of the men who conspired to kill Julius Caesar. Each sculpture was so intricately and artfully made, and now they are so incredibly ancient! Many of these statues were sculpted from marble at least 2,000 years ago.  A few of them were cast from bronze. What a great honor to take a peek at what Romans looked like so very long ago.  I was especially astounded in November to be standing face to face with Caesar Augustus, the man responsible for issuing the decree that a census should be taken of all the Roman world - which led Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem just in time for baby Jesus to be born (See Luke chapter 2).

Roman Shadows

We don't get a whole lot of amazing shadows here in the Seattle area, I think mostly due to all the cloudy days. Rome, however, was a whole different story while we were there. Here are a few examples. Enjoy!
